How busy did the light tunnels on The Woodlands Waterway get last December? The Township counted. Pathway counters on the main lighted corridor recorded 209,033 trips between November 21, 2025, and January 4, 2026. The season before, the same corridor recorded 120,289. That is a 73.78% jump in one year, according to an August 20, 2026 Township Board of Directors agenda packet.
Growth explains most of what is different about the 2026 holiday season in Town Center. Building on the Waterway's numbers, December gets a new fireworks series designed to bring in visitors. Separately, the Thanksgiving morning race changed how runners get their bibs because its own turnout set a record last year. Read with that growth in mind, the calendar shows which nights are designed for a crowd.
What the counters recorded
The 209,033 figure covers only the primary lighted corridor. Across all four counter locations, the Township recorded 297,668 trips during the 2025–26 season. The free Town Center Trolley grew too, from 31,044 passenger trips in 2024 to 38,901 in 2025, a 25% increase.
The same packet calls Holiday on The Waterway "a free, self-guided seasonal experience" meant to get people walking the Waterway, taking photos, visiting nearby businesses and riding the trolley.
This year's display opens Saturday, November 21, and runs through January 3, 2027. Expect oversized snowflakes, ornaments, gift boxes and light tunnels along the sidewalk. You can see it on foot, from the trolley, or from a swan boat rented through Riva Row, according to Visit The Woodlands' 2026 holiday guide. The guide also says hot-beverage vendors are onsite on Saturday evenings, and it points to Dessert Gallery nearby for a warm cookie.
Who is paying for Fireworks Fridays, and why
New this year, Waterway Square will host live music and fireworks on three Fridays: December 4, 11 and 18. Visit The Woodlands calls the series a sister event to the Lighting of the Doves.
The budget behind it shows who it is meant for. In July 2026, the Visit The Woodlands board set aside up to $55,000 from its fund balance for the series, for "2026 and subsequent years," pending approval by the Township board. The packet describes three two-hour evenings, each pairing fireworks with a live concert or similar entertainment. Each night is estimated at roughly $15,000 to $17,500 for fireworks, band and sound. That estimate leaves out extra law enforcement, which the packet says will likely cost at least $10,000 per event night.
The stated goals are mostly about visitors:
Increase awareness of Holiday on The Waterway as a regional destination experience. Generate measurable hotel room nights during a seasonal shoulder period. Increase restaurant, retail, hospitality and entertainment spending. Encourage visitors to extend their time in The Woodlands.
The list ends with "an enhanced seasonal experience for residents and visitors."
For anyone who lives within a trolley ride of Waterway Square, the takeaway is simple. The tourism budget is paying for those three Friday nights so that more people from outside The Woodlands come, stay longer and book hotel rooms. If you want the fireworks, plan Fridays around a busier Town Center than last December's. If you want the lights at a quieter pace, other nights of the week are open. Start times and performers are not on the guide yet, so keep an eye on the Township's Parks & Recreation festivals page as December gets closer.
Opening week fits into one long weekend
The new Fridays come at the end of the season. The start is crowded too, and much of it is set for one long weekend in November.

The first deadline comes before any of these events. Junior League of The Woodlands sells advance general admission at $18 through November 15. After that, it is $20 at the door.
The ice rink opens Friday, November 20, and closes January 18, 2027. Both dates are one day earlier than last season, which ran November 21, 2025, through January 19, 2026, according to the Township's 2025 rink listing. Visit The Woodlands lists the 2026 price as $15 for a two-hour session. The rink also hosts birthdays, disco nights and sensory-friendly sessions during the season.
Saturday, November 21 is the busiest day of the season. The Lighting of the Doves festival runs 3 to 8 p.m. at Town Green Park. Santa arrives, the giant doves along the Waterway light up, and fireworks start at 7 p.m. The snow play areas and slides need a $5 wristband, sold onsite by cash or card. Visit The Woodlands adds live music on two stages, strolling entertainment and crafts with The Woodlands Children's Museum. The Waterway lights turn on the same day. A few blocks away at the Pavilion, Boni's Dance stages its 40th-anniversary Nutcracker at 3 and 7 p.m., with tickets through Ticketmaster.
Two light shows run on their own schedules and work well on any weeknight. Market Street in Lights plays a three-minute synchronized show in Central Park every hour from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., mid-November through December 31. In The Courtyard at The Woodlands Mall, a 40-foot tree has a light-and-music show every 30 minutes from sunset until closing, through the same dates. On Thursday, December 10, the Market Street Sing-Off runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Thanksgiving morning, rearranged by its own record
Holiday on The Waterway is not the only event outgrowing its old setup. The 37th annual YMCA Run Thru the Woods takes place Thanksgiving morning, November 26, at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. Organizers say that "due to the exciting growth and record participation at last year's event," they "will no longer be offering race day packet pickup." The race has raised more than $4 million over three decades for YMCA programs and other Montgomery County charities.
That means getting your bib, timing chip and shirt before the holiday week fills up. Packet pickup is at Shadowbend YMCA, 6145 Shadowbend Place, on this schedule:
- Saturday, November 21: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Sunday, November 22: 1 to 4 p.m.
- Monday, November 23, and Tuesday, November 24: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Wednesday, November 25: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The race FAQ says a friend or family member can pick up your packet if you tell them ahead of time. Packets cannot be mailed. If your family includes both early risers and people who sleep in, the Saturday window overlaps with the Doves festival and the Waterway opening. One trip to Shadowbend that morning can cover the whole group.
Registration costs go up twice before race day. Today's prices last through Friday, October 30, at 11:59 p.m. Here they are, before service and signup fees:
| Event | Start time | Through Oct. 30 | From Oct. 31 | From Nov. 23 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5-mile race | 8:15 a.m. | $50 | $60 | $80 |
| 3-mile race | 8:25 a.m. | $45 | $55 | $75 |
| 3-mile walk | 8:30 a.m. | $40 | $50 | $70 |
| 1-mile kids race | 7:30 a.m. | $35 | $45 | $65 |
All races start and finish in front of the Pavilion. Participants need to finish by 9:30 a.m. so roads can reopen. The FAQ suggests parking at The Woodlands Mall or the Pavilion Parking Garage.
Planning around the crowds
Put together, the 2026 calendar shows its high-traffic days ahead of time. Saturday, November 21 has the festival, the Waterway opening, two Nutcracker performances and the first packet pickup window, all in or near Town Center. Thanksgiving morning brings what the YMCA describes as thousands of community members to the Pavilion before 9:30. The three December Fridays are designed to draw visitors to Waterway Square.
Everything else on the calendar is open to plan around. The Waterway lights run every night through January 3, the trolley is free, the Market Street show plays every hour, and the rink takes two-hour sessions through mid-January. Last season's counters recorded 209,033 trips along the main lighted corridor. Picking a weeknight to walk the corridor is the simplest way to see the display without the Friday crowd.
Watching Town Center fill up each December says something about how in-demand the area around the Waterway has become. If you live nearby and want to know what that demand means for your own address, Janet Chavez Realty Group would be glad to walk through it with you, privately and with no pressure.
